I remember it as looking incredibly similar in theme, though it didn't even register with me that it was a Sam's pub at the time.

One of these days I'll make it into the Alpine, Tandleman's review of the Stout is making me think a visit is in order.JonathanDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16039587930824132899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8629758183547510158.post-29715121727816300182017-04-06T20:29:03.670+01:002017-04-06T20:29:03.670+01:00Your description of this "...take-off of a Ge...Your description of this "...take-off of a German local pub..." reminds me of Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, a Sams pub in London. True, that was busier last night than yours in downtown Rochdale, more expensive - although OBB at £3.20 ain't bad in the Smoke - and more vibrant.

Nevertheless, it's dark red theme and chateau-like appearance is odd, and one can't help thinking that it would be rammed if it appeared more welcoming. One wonders if Sams are genuinely excentric, or just trying to appear so ! I was pleasantly surprised recently when I drank it for the first time in about ten years. I vaguely remembered it as similar to Guinness, but either it has improved, my palate has improved or Guinness has got worse. I suspect a little of all three.

You have doubtless heard the story of how it originated, when Humph told Guinness where to stick their proposed price rise? I believe the pub used to very much major on food.

I suppose an Alpine and Taddy mix makes a tolerable 3.65% ABV lager at a bargain price.

And no mild whatsoever, either light or dark? I'm not sure I've ever seen a mild-free Sam's pub.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.com
