Their pubs should have been readily identifiable from miles away. The problem was that there was a thriving black-market in Hartleys paint, meaning that many residential houses could easily be mistaken for a pub! Around here, both Robinson's and Holts were very distinctive, and very different from each other.<br /><br />The only one where that still applies is Sam Smith's. Sit someone down in a Sam's pub now, and even without any beermats or prohibitory notices, they would instantly know whose it was. <br /><br />I think the pub trade as whole suffers from a lack of distinctive identity.
