Dear Do at Oktoberfest


Prices have been announced for this year's Oktoberfest and for the first time prices per litre will break the €9 mark. This has been met with predictable howls of outrage and complaints of profiteering against a background of huge under-filling of glasses. Brewers in turn blame the state which requires much stricter anti terrorism measures, pushing up costs

One philosophic type though has rationalised the issue thus:

" Here is how I plan to consider it:

Beer cost: 6 euro.

Dirndl viewing surcharge: 3.20 euro.

Somehow, this arithmetic makes the beer taste a bit better"

He probably has a point!

    The price wouldn't be quite so outrageous if you actually got a litre, as opposed to the slightly more than a pint you do get.

    The current rate of exchange is £1 = €1.13, but on a purchasing power parity basis it's more like 1:1.3, as the pound has fallen in the past two or three years. That (assuming you get full measure) is about £3.90 a pint, which is what you would pay for premium lager in plenty of the more upmarket establishments in the UK now. So quite pricey, but not a total rip-off.

    In 2005 I remember paying €7.00 for 500ml of Heineken or suchlike in one bar in France.

    I'll stick to Belgium. €3.50 for a strong beer and English spoken everwhere in Flanders.

    €9 for a litre of beer. That's a bargain! Here in Norway a half litre of beer often costs about €8-9. And a half litre of craft beer from tap is normally at least €10.

    Considering a motion to make Dirndl mandatory at all beer festivals...

    It's worth bearing in mind that Oktoberfestbier is 6% ABV. And when in Munich a few days ago, there were pubs charging 4.10 euros for a half litre of standard-strength beer.

    Neil, my advice: make sure you eat. I had five litres and didn't bother eating. Big mistake.

    Despite that, I really enjoyed it.

    Y.E.T.A.N.O.T.H.E.R. Reason to avoid it yet another year. Would say I actually ignore it, but I actually don't; we sometimes catch a bit of it on telly.

    It's worth bearing in mind that Oktoberfestbier is 6% ABV.

    It's also worth bearing in mind that it's utter shite!

    For those who havent been, I found this great guide to the Oktoberfest Beer Festival The prices can seem quite high, but again consider the prices of pints in most places in England. I know in london they are between £4-5 a pint in some places. For the 9 euros you will get a significantly stronger drink and a larger one at that. Plus you get to drink amongst the other attendees and enjoy the festivities. I have been and find it a really great place to get drunk and meet fellow minded people!You can also find loads of Oktoberfest Hotels as well and so may be able to save some money on them at least!
