Empire Building for Punks

Scotland on Sunday has a good piece on you know who.  I like these two quotes:  "a style bar is where they spend £6m on the fit-out and serve the same shit as they serve next door".  And " CAMRA is staid, it's tacky, it's conservative, it's old fashioned, it would put your grandparents to sleep.  I'd gladly line up the lot of them and fire cans of Punk off their heads."

I work out from the article which isn't yet on line, their production is around 18,300 barrels a year.  The proposed new brewery will allow five times more production.

I think I must be virally infected or God forbid, I'm coming round to them.

The title above is the SoS article title should you wish to browse for it in the future.

  1. Judging by all the recent free publicity you've been giving them, I can see a future for you in their PR dept.

  2. I thought they were great at first but now I think they're a bunch of pricks.

  3. Just waiting for the free beer, but it looks as though I'll have to extract it from being buried deep in my nut.

  4. They have been borderline racist in the past, they are certainly devoid of any concept of courtesy and they have a juvenile sense of humour. I have only ever seen their beer once in a pub, so what's all the fuss about?

Come the revolution, I'd line them up against a wall ... and leave them there.

  5. I'm with Tyson on this - they have long since jumped the shark

  6. What? You think I'm in Brew Dog's pocket? I should fucking well co co.

They are indeed a pair of tossers. And what, pray, is "jumping the shark"?

  7. Who was the Tandleman who said he was "coming round to them"? Confused now.

"Jumping the shark": "the moment in its evolution when a brand, design, or creative effort moves beyond the essential qualities that initially defined its success, beyond relevance or recovery". When the good stuff gets lost in the noise, in other words. Think of it as the twisting of Loki's smile, if that helps.

  8. Jumping The Shark originally came from from the entertainment industry referring to what occurred in Happy Days - it coins the moment where the programme went from an upward curve of goodness to a downward spiral of comedy parody - in this case where Fonzie literally 'jumps the shark' in his leather coat, speedos and waterskis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark

It's a phrase which seems to have recently come back into vogue.

  9. Well there you go. Her indoors has already explained it to me.

As for me Phil, I obviously need to make my irony more obvious.

  10. Sadly, some of us don't need to look it up in wikipedia-we remember it happening at the time.

Irony? Don't tell me the Scots have developed a sense of humour now? Next they'll be getting their own parliament.

  11. "I thought they were great at first but now I think they're a bunch of pricks."

What he said - though add a sense of embarrassment because they are from my family's home town.

  12. On balance I like Brewdog. Some of the stuff they say and do is pretty stupid, but largely speaking they brew good beers, I'm told that their bars are good and overall they provide some lively entertainment and give us something to talk about. So definitely more pluses than minuses, with the first two points being particularly key.
