In My Liverpool Home

Even as a former resident of the City of Liverpool, I often find it hard to like Liverpool's  Cain's Brewery, due to a number of factors, not least of which is that their beer is pretty much crap. Nonetheless, I am on their email list and couldn't resist showing you all this pump clip for their newest beer, Blonde Bird Ale, featuring the wonderful city emblem of the Liver Bird. It is  the first new cask beer brewed by their new Head Brewer, Jim Kerr.

Hopefully the beer will be really good - I do hope so - but either way, I love the pumpclip.

For me though, Cain's Brewery will always be Higson's Brewery even though it started out as, err, well, Cain's Brewery.  It's a long story.

Some Cains beers were good until around the time they went into administration about three years ago, after which the quality declined rapidly. Let's hope this new brewer (from Brains of Cardiff, I understand, not from Simple Minds) can improve things. Yes, nice pump clip.

Once had a pint of Cains in Wavertree. I didn't touch the pong for years after that, and stuck to Stella. Even the thought of a pint of pong made me feel queasy. Twas only through reading beer blogs I overcame my aversion.

Their beers are poor and CAMRA lost a preety penny when they went int administration a few years back.
The beers are actually quite rare in Liverpool.

I don't think I've ever had any of their cask ales. Quite liked both the Raisin Beer and Doppelbock in bottles, though, and remember thinking a kegged mild of theirs was the right pint at the right time. (Couldn't describe its flavour, though.)

Thank god the pumpclip isn't a picture of a blonde in a bikini, although that was presumably what they had in mind when they came up with the name.

Exactly what RedNev said...
I used to love a pint of the Cains Bitter in The Volunteer in Waterloo, but I haven't had a good pint in a long time.

Here's hoping the new brewer gets them pointing in the right direction, and I'll certainly give this one a go at the beer festival this weekend...

Bailey - Given the Liver Bird's significance in Scousely and the fact that it is a blonde beer, I am not so sure you are right.
