Chester Bound

I'm off to Chester tomorrow with my pub mates. It should be fun, particularly as I'm in charge of finding good beer, while they sort out the cultural diversions. They are all culture buffs, but beer tends to elbow culture aside in these little excursions and I'm guessing tomorrow will be no exception. There is a Lees tied house there and my mates expressed an interest in visiting. It gets a hold of you does John Willies.

Last night Graham and I had a few beers. As I have taken flak for saying bad things about brewers and their beer, I'll simply report that it was all very nice.

Durham Bees Knees was drunk in the Smithfield only after being assured it had no honey in it!

PLEASE don't let the anon trolls stop you from voicing your opinion. The beauty of blogs is that they're personal, independent and provoke discussion. I for one find your opinion on ale, be it approval or scorn, valuable and interesting and think that this site would less appealing without it. You already have a 'disclaimer' on each page warning of your forthright opinions and the right to disagree.

So, go on, tell us which pisswater you had the misfortune to sample last night!

Seconded! Stick to your guns and say what you think, Peter. Unless I happen to disagree, of course ;-)

Talismann, I hope you plan on visiting the Mill Hotel? Not really a pub, but christ, what a selection! I also visited a pub called the Black Dog, that was on a main road. Try to get into The Falcon as well. Sam Smith's pub, but oh so old. I had many pints of a beer called Greenall's, that was killer. I don't care if it was brewed Carlsberg-Tetley. Hopping was West Coast'ish. Wales is only about a 20 minute drive from Chester. You should probably go to Llangollen as well. Gorgeous little town, with very nice pubs.

The Mill Hotel is worth a visit, but the Brains SA I had there cost £2.70 a pint a year ago. I'm used to around £2.25 here in Southport, although no doubt not for much longer.

Have a nice trip. If it were today (Thursday), I could get there for a £1 ~ special offer on Merseyrail on Thursdays and Sundays in the run-up to Christmas. I might go next Thursday to Chester and try out some of the pubs mentioned

My Dear Fellows

I thought it was only Yankees that didn't get irony! Don't worry, it was written tongue in cheek. Last night the beer was good and there was nowt to say really. It would be a boring blog though if it was all like that post.

Nev and Wurst, The Mill Hotel will likely be visited, but not Llangollen!

Peter, have you heard that Spitting feathers have opened a brewery tap just up from the Okells pub on Lower Bridge Street? It's at Gamul House at 54 Lower Bridge Street although as it's only just opened (well, I think it has...!) I've not been.

There used to be 2 Lees pubs, I've been to Duttons, a bit poncy and Cheshire Set for me, dunno if Clavertons is still about...

But I'd second the Mill, Old Harker's Arms, Bear & Billet and Telford's warehouse!

I have of course printed out the Chester gen from your site, as well as some useful stuff from CAMRA, so it was on my list to check it out. I'll let you know what I find.

When I lived in Liverpool and my ex wife was Front of House at the Everyman Theatre, they used to sell pint bottles of Cestrian Bitter in the Bistro. I think I was the only bugger that drank it though!
