Champion Beer of Greater Manchester

Announced yesterday at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, it is Pictish Alchemists Ale, a clear, golden, hoppy, little number which, alas, wasn't on my panel's list of beers. Second was Phoenix Spotland Gold and third was Greenfield Black Five. All are brewed in my CAMRA Branch's area, so a clean sweep for us. Hooray!

Pictish are fine brewers. In fact some would say that Richard Sutton of Pictish is producing some of the most exciting and drinkable beers around in the UK.

They are right. He is!

From my limited exposure to Pictish, I've been suitably impressed too. Will have to pester our landlord to rack up an all Pictish stillage at the next showcase event.

Best brewer in the UK at present IMO - okay so the beers won't please old-fashioned CAMRA types, being far too "mid-atlantic" and hoppy, but I love 'em.

Wow! Praise indeed. The bitter is drinking superbly at the moment.

Just had a bunch of the Alchy-mists this weekend and it really is exceptional! Another feather in the cap of this outstanding brewery.
